Solar Powered Lights
Nowadays, who doesn’t know what solar powered lights are? Thankfully we are all becoming more environmentally aware and if items like solar powered lights are helping our planet, well why not do our bit? Apart from they’re energy efficiency; they are also pretty convenient because they tend to need little or no installation, which also helps to keep their cost down!
Now I’m not technical in any way but just to explain how they work (in Layman’s terms): A solar powered light is made up of a solar cell, a rechargeable battery, a lamp and a charge controller. The solar cell (or solar panel) is the black panel that, in most cases, tends to be built into the unit or can also be linked close by. It is this solar panel that generates power from the sun and lights the lamp at night. The lamps used are generally LED as they are brighter and need a lot less energy to glow. The charge controller is what prevents the battery from being over-charged and is basically the intelligence behind the lamps operation.
The use of solar powered lights is generally for outdoors and we are all familiar with solar powered lights for lighting pathways, garden beds and so forth. There are numerous other options available however, and they’re not just for lighting pathways and garden beds. They range from practical solutions like the above to fun lighting, accent lighting, ambient lighting, clever lighting and the downright kitsch!
When it comes to the practical you really have to consider how and for how long you will need to use your desired outdoor light. Solar powered lights tend to be at their strongest from dusk and through early evening which is generally when they are most needed, however they do diminish throughout the night so it’s good to bare that in mind if you need lighting for longer. It is also worth baring in mind that the amount of light emitted will also depend on weather conditions during the day. If it has been raining or overcast throughout the day, the light emitted by the lamps in the evening will be reduced, compared to the light emitted after a sunny day. Solar powered lights will never provide as much light as mains powered lighting, however their installation requires no digging, no costly electricians, they can easily be moved, they’re kinder on the environment and their overall costs tend to be lower.
