Battery Operated Tea Lights
If you want to add ambience or create an atmosphere but are on a tight budget then Battery Operated Tea Lights (or votives) are just what you are looking for. They can be used as is and clustered together for greater impact or they can be used in a variety of homemade or shop bought tea light holders.
Tea lights originated as a candle used to heat tea or food because they burn for many hours. Many people nowadays would know them from the familiar food warmers at restaurants or if they have a fondue set or oil burner at home. Tea Lights are also used as an ambient light as they don’t tend to give off a lot of light, as with candles in general. Votives, which nowadays is really just another word for tea light, where originally prayer candles that, were burnt as an offering in religious ceremonies. They were small in size, like the tea light candle, which is probably why they are both now virtually seen as one and the same. The one distinct difference with tea lights and votives is that the original wax burning tea lights come in a thin metal cover to hold the wax when it liquefies. Of course with the battery operated variety the metal cover is not required or is the wax for that matter, so there’s really no difference between a tea light or votive!
The variety of Battery Operated Tea Lights and tea light holders available is simply vast. And again, the options available cater for both the budget conscious and spendthrift alike. If you’re really on a tight budget but don’t like the idea of using tea lights ‘naked’ as it were, then it’s time to get clever with what’s in and around your home. It’s time to rescue some jars from the recycling bin, to be gentler with those brown paper bags, to blow the dust off those unused glasses at the back of the cupboard or get handy with a chunk of wood or hebel or soapstone and a chisel!
I know I’ve said this time and time again but the great thing about Battery Operated Lights is they are safe and particularly so with tea lights compared to their original counterparts which apparently have been blamed as the cause of many domestic fires due to the overheating of the wax which is caused by spent matches left inside the tea light during use. Of course with battery operated tea lights there are no flames to worry about either and no inconvenience of having to relight them if they are blown out and so are ideal both inside and out and anywhere around the home. Again they are a great gift idea, perfect for the kids and can add great ambience to any occasion from a romantic dinner for two too a grand wedding. Because there are no flames they are a great in garden. They can be used in all types of outdoor lanterns (see battery operated lanterns) that require a tea light and are a great and safe option for paper lanterns and for any tea light vessel that can be hung in a tree.
Now the selections as I’ve mentioned are vast. For example you have LED, which we all know means extra long life or in some cases everlasting! Then there are realistic flickering flame options or no flicker options. Remote controlled options. There are rechargeable, colour changing and battery operated real wax options. There are those sold individually or in packs of 3 or up to 100. There are some that come with a holder and some that come accompanied with a hollowed out candle so you can have an everlasting candle. And the ones that surprised me the most are the submersible options .. Who knew? So no matter what you’re after, there’s just got to be a battery operated tea light option out there for you!
