Battery LED Lights
LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights are a fantastic energy efficient alternative to compact florescent and incandescent lighting. They have a far longer lifetime too as they last up to 10 times longer than a florescent light bulb and far longer still than an incandescent bulb. LED bulbs are small but solid which means they are more durable and hold up to knocks and bumps which will obviously help to extend their life.
LED Lights were originally used as single bulb applications such as pen lights and Christmas lights but their uses are considerably broadened as they are now used in clusters. They are now more widely used in various lighting applications in and around the home and are becoming ever more popular because of their long life and low energy consumption.
LED Lights tend to be a little more expensive than standard light fixtures but they’re energy efficiency and long-life means the costs are soon recovered. For example, the life span of an LED light is 100,000 hours; the average life span of an incandescent light is 5,000 hours. When you consider you would need to replace the incandescent light 20 times, the LED option is a no brainer!
Another important consideration of LED lights is their energy consumption. 80% of energy is used to 'light' an LED bulb, with only 20% lost as heat energy. The exact opposite is the case for an incandescent bulb, so 20% of energy is used to 'light' it, with 80% lost as heat energy. What this shows is that LED lights will keep electrical costs low. With incandescent lighting, the high heat output also means more air conditioning is needed to keep the home cool in summer, so even more energy is consumed!
LED Lights are available in ‘cool’ white light which is great for task lighting and ‘warm’ white light which is ideal for accent lighting or general lighting. There are great options in LED lighting for both indoors and outdoors. The variety available is growing just as quickly as their popularity, which is all down to their great environmental benefits.
My favourite LED battery light is the very clever and versatile Eveready Rechargeable Light Stick Desk Lamp which I featured on my home page. Sorry for going on about but I do love the ingenuity of it. Why do I like it? Well because I love anything that has more than one function and this clever lamp is certainly more than just your standard desk lamp. It is a Light on Demand stick and emergency light in one and when the power goes out the find me light turns on instantly to help you locate the lamp. Now, don’t you agree that’s clever!!
Other great LED lights for around the home are ‘Puck’ Lights (also known as Dot It’s or Push Lights). These small self adhesive lights are a great idea for under cabinet lighting and for those dark nooks around the house like under the stairs, a closet, a dark stairwell, attic space and so on. They’re also great in a power outage. I use them as under cabinet lighting and they have helped me finish preparing dinner during a recent power outage, so I recommend them for that alone. They can also be used on a bookcase to accent some special items or to make a focal point in a space.
There is a wide range of LED Battery Operated Under Cabinet Lighting available. It can get a little pricey but the fact that they are easy to install (no wiring) and they have a very long life will help to keep the cost down in the long run. There are heaps more ‘easy install’ options for around the home, like the Battery Powered LED Picture Light which simply clips on to a picture or LED Battery Operated Wall Sconces. For Outdoors there is another favourite of mine, the LED Battery Powered LED Umbrella Patio Light. Outdoor lighting is expensive so if there’s something clever and affordable on the market that helps to extend our time outdoors during those warmer summer months, I love it! There are also the Solar Powered LED options but I’ll talk about that on my Solar Powered Lighting Page!
